The internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the fourth-oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, is known for trailblazing performances, visionary maestros, and collaborations with the world’s foremost musical artists. The DSO offers a year-round performance schedule that includes classical, pops, jazz, young people’s concerts and festivals. Job Summary

Seeking an energetic, driven, and creative full-time team member to support the work of the DSO’s Communications Department.

You will assist the Communications Department in promoting the DSO to both external and internal audiences, working closely with the Content Manager.

We are a small but mighty team of dedicated professionals tasked with being the voice for a world-class orchestra. This often means working behind the scenes and taking pride in supporting the bigger picture. Every part of the process is valuable, whether it’s building email lists that help patrons get from point A to point B or taking the time to ask a student what their experience was like at the concert they attended. We appreciate minds with vision to make our world run more smoothly, paired with the pragmatism and patience to execute plans.


Communications: Support and execute the creation of email campaigns, newsletters, and the DSO annual report.

Monitor and execute live chat options for DSO’s webcast: Create Facebook event pages, promote webcasts across social media platforms, ensure quality of feed during livestream, interact with viewers, collect and organize patron comments to be used in publications, and build related graphics.

Social media: Craft graphics, play a key role in managing Instagram Stories, monitor social media comments and daily media report to respond to patrons in a timely fashion, relaunch DSO Pinterest page, create campaign and event-specific social media graphics packages, maintain growth statistics database.

Storytelling: Engage with diverse group of DSO patrons, musicians, staff, and volunteers for content creation, including collecting quotes and developing potential story ideas. Support interview projects via script writing, location scheduling, and assisting on video/photo shoots, with potential to lead projects. Write newsletter blurbs and feature articles. Write, curate, and post blog posts. Event and photojournalistic photography possible.

Preferred Skills:


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, media, English, journalism, or related field preferred; or music degree with related internship or professional experience.
  • Excellent editing, writing, and proofreading ability required, as well as the ability to “storyboard” narrative concepts and produce work that is cohesive with an established voice.
  • Familiarity with posting best practices for YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, and Instagram required.
  • Adeptness for image composition and established ability to produce photos required.
  • Proficiency with DSLR/mirrorless video capture and basic audio capture preferred, as well as experience with Adobe Premiere (or equivalent) for video editing. Experience researching and drafting interview questions and conducting interviews a plus.
  • Experience with email marketing service (e.g. WordFly, Constant Contact, Mailchimp, etc.) preferred.
  • Proficiency with essential Adobe Creative Cloud preferred. Canva user a plus.
  • Knowledge of classical music and the symphony orchestra a plus.

  • Must demonstrate strong organizational and administrative skills and the ability to prioritize tasks, meet multiple deadlines, and work independently. Availability and willingness to shift 9-to-5 working hours to night and weekend hours where necessary.
