CulturePop activates public spaces throughout downtown Detroit with random, surprising, and experiential arts pop-ups, imbuing the city with creativity and ensuring that the arts are part of people's everyday lives.

The Summer 2018 pilot program included 14 CulturePop activations at lunch, after work, and over weekends at six outdoor public spaces (Campus Martius Park, Spirit Plaza, Cadillac Square, Capitol Park, Woodward Avenue Esplanade, and Grand Circus Park), and two nontraditional art spaces (parking garage elevators and storefront windows along Woodward Avenue). Featured presenters included: Akropolis Reed Quintet, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Focus: HOPE, Girls Rock Detroit, Heritage Works, InsideOut Literary Arts Project, Motor City Brass Band, Motor City Street Dance Academy, N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art, Pewabic, Seafoam Palace Museum, and Signal-Return.

In September 2018, CulturePop activations also appeared at the inaugural Sukkah x Detroit festival in Capitol Park, part of Detroit's Month of Design.

"A personal note about being in front of the Spirit of Detroit I wanted to share. I would say about 2001-02, my brother and I got our licenses and we immediately drove downtown with our camcorder to dance downtown. One of the main spaces we wanted to dance in front of was the Spirit of Detroit… security made us leave, this happened more than enough times over the years. For me, this event was a victory because not only was I able to bring my company out and showcase positive hip hop culture, but because I wasn't removed this time, I was invited and welcomed."

Benito "Mav One" Vasquez, executive director & founder, Motor City Street Dance Academy
